Butterscotch Brownie with Walnuts

The flavor of butterscotch is created by combining butter and brown sugar. It's delicious with ice cream so it must be even better if it's fused together with brownies.

The recipe used here is from Betty Crocker's Cookbook.

    1/4 cup butter or margarine
    1 cup packed brown sugar
    1 teaspoon vanilla
    2 tablespoons milk
    1 large egg
    1 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cup chopped nuts, if desired
    1 teaspoon baking powder
    1/2 teaspoon salt

1. Heat oven to 350°F. Grease bottom and sides of 8-inch square pan with shortening.
2. In 1 1/2-quart saucepan, melt butter over low heat; remove from heat. Stir in brown sugar, vanilla, milk, and egg. Stir in remaining ingredients. Spread in pan.
3. Bake about 25 minutes or until golden brown. Cool 5 minutes in pan on wire rack. For brownies, cut into 4 rows by 4 rows while warm.

All the wet ingredients together.

The addition of dry ingredients.

Right before it goes into the oven.

This Betty Crocker recipe was a disappointment. Brownies are supposed to be dense and chewy but this turned out to be more cake-like. A few people have tried it and they all asked what kind of cake it was. They were surprised that it was supposed to be a brownie. Otherwise, the taste was good.

I might try this recipe again. Maybe something was off when I made it: Didn't bake long enough, oven temperature was off, too much or too little of certain ingredients. The reason why I'm willing to try it again is because it's a Betty Crocker recipe. Betty Crocker usually delivers and next time, I will see if it's me or her. It's going to be a showdown so stay tuned.

  1. I can't believe you made a post without telling me! I have your blog with rss feed so now I will never miss your post! Btw, isn't this supposed to be a blondie recipe since you are using brown sugar instead of chocolate? Maybe you're being overly critical, but in my opinion I think these blondies look amazing! I'm drooling just looking at it! When will you make me some? Fortunately I took pictures of my dark chocolate chip cookies which I will make a post of it when I have time at home! My mom never brought it into work which is great since the ones I gave to my coworkers were all gone!

  2. You know, it does look a bit cakey. The recipe that I use has different steps and also white sugar is incorporated into it. But it looks great regardless! I want some!!
